PETALING JAYA, Jan 11: PKR Bureau of Consumer Affairs will be launching the 1 million consumer signatures campaign starting from tomorrow to urge the Selangor Water Supply Company (Syabas – Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor) to hand over the management of water to the Selangor State Government.
Its Chairman, Yahya Sahri said that the campaign is being held after being pressured from various parties representing consumers in Selangor and the Federal Territory to ensure that Syabas withdraws.
According to him, the campaign also has the support of 35 non-governmental organisations (NGOs), village heads as well as community leaders in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
“These demands are because Syabas failed to perform their duties and responsibilities properly as a treated water supply concession company in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. Syabas’ failure can be seen and felt by all consumers for failing to provide quality and clean water to the consumers.
“Syabas also explicitly recognised that its management had failed to provide good service to consumers when its complaint department received thousands of complaints from consumers everyday. If users are satisfied, they would not file complaints,” he said in a press conference at the PKR headquarters today.
Yahya added that his department will be organising a campaign to sue Syabas following their failure to fulfil their agreement to supply the best quality water to consumers, especially in Selangor.
He said that as a result of Syabas’ failure to maintain the water pumps, consumers now have to face water crisis which is becoming increasingly serious.
“The Consumer Bureau wants Syabas to stop politics and to act honestly by not giving excuses that due to the absence of the Langat 2 project, there is a water crisis. Syabas has to surrender, on honorable terms, the management of water to the State Government because water is not for sale and purchase but is for the needs of the people,” he said.
