Syabas Urged To Investigate Leaflets Criticising The State Government

SHAH ALAM, 30 JAN: The Selangor Government wants an internal investigation to be carried out regarding the distribution of leaflets criticising the State Government in relation to the water issue which involves the Selangor Water Supply Company (Syabas – Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor).

Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said that the information was obtained as a result of complaints from the people and that the pamphlet was issued without the consent and knowledge of the Syabas Board of Directors.

Initial investigation results have found that the leaflets were issued by the Syabas Executive Director of Technical Development, Ir V Subramaniam.

“As a Syabas shareholder, the Darul Ehsan Berhad Group (owned by the Selangor Government) insisted that there should be an internal investigation on Subramaniam for acting beyond his authority,” he said in a press conference after the Exco Meeting.

The leaflets were similar to several ads that appeared in Umno-BN controlled newspapers last week, criticising the State Government’s statement.

In addition, Abdul Khalid said in a different media statement that the Selangor Government was informed that incidences of leaking pipes often occur and this will affect the supply of water to the people.

“The state government will monitor the matter seriously to safeguard the interests of more than five million consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

“So that they are not affected by water outages due to Syabas failure in maintaining pipes properly and regularly,” Abdul Khalid said.

Earlier this month, for two weeks, the people of Selangor were faced with a water crisis which caused half a million people in Ampang, Cheras and Gombak to suffer water supply problems.

As a result of the intervention of the State Government, through the Selangor Water Monitoring Committee, the water supply crisis was resolved in a short period and faster than expected by Syabas.
