PAS President, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, said that the government should adopt taxing methods in accordance with teachings of Islam by only taxing a product that is profitable and not as a whole.

He said that the Islamic taxing system always ensures that the purchasing power of the people is stable and stronger.

“PAS remains consistent in rejecting the GST because it could undermine the country’s economic future.

“The GST cannot just be a painkiller for the government by making the people its ingredients,” he said in a keynote speech at the 59th PAS Annual Congress today.

“The modern tax system can be imposed by the government on the people regardless of whether the tax is imposed on necessary goods or transactions of the people,” he added.

The Government will implement the GST beginning 1 April 2015 at a rate of six percent, replacing the sales and services tax.

Previously, Pakatan Rakyat (PR) objected to the implementation of the GST because it is a tax that will burden the low and middle income group, and cause inflation and price increase of goods.
