SHAH ALAM, 4 Dec: Selangor will be the first state for the Selangor State Assembly Opposition Leader to be appointed as the Chairman for the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
The State Assembly Speaker, Hannah Yeoh, said that the State Assembly has requested for standing orders and makes the appointment as compulsory and the position shall be reserved for the Opposition leader.
“The PAC position must be chaired by the Opposition Leader. We will be the first in Malaysia to put it in regulation.
“This is to ensure that the rights and position of the Opposition Leader is protected regardless of which party is the government and opposition in the future,” she said during a media conference after the State Assembly session was suspended today.
The State Assembly Opposition Leader, Datuk Shamsudin Lias, was appointed as the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairman replacing Ng Suee Lim (DAP-Sekinchan) at the Selangor State Assembly session today.
She said that Shamsudin previously refused to be appointed to the post twice and if he stands by his decision, then he would have to vacate the position of Opposition Leader.
“Selangor Umno needs to decide who will be appointed as the Opposition Leader. Now, the state government grants an official car and special allowances to the Opposition Leader.
“With these facilities, the state government insists that he must perform his duty as the PAC Chairman” she said.
However, Hannah said that she will wait for the official decision from Shamsudin.
The proposal was submitted by Tan Pok Shyong (DAP-Pandamaran) and supported by Iskandar Abdul Samad (PAS-Chempaka) and approved by the State Assembly.
Hannah said that the State Assembly also approved several other committee appointments following the change of positions among several Assemblymen as State Government Executive Councillors.
