SHAH ALAM, 20 Nov: The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, revealed the secret to the success of Selangor in increasing revenue and reserves to RM2.76 billion is by updating current tax collection and arrears left by behind by Barisan Nasional (BN).
The state government has taken steps to implement the Integrated Operations in the Collection of Land Revenue, with the cooperation of the Selangor State Treasury, district offices, the Selangor Land and Mines Office, and the Information Technology Office, the State Government Secretary in an operation called ‘Ops Kutip’ (Operation Collection).
Abdul Khalid, (PKR-Port Klang) said that the state government would also give gifts to agencies under them that successfully collects the highest tax revenue and not by increasing the tax of the people for the purpose.
“Two weeks ago, I gave gifts to the district office which managed to increase land tax collections up to 95 percent from the original revenue, such as the Gombak District Office and the Petaling District Office,” he said when answering an oral question by Assemblyman Sulaiman Abdul Razak (BN-Permatang).
Among the policies taken in the Ops Kutip was to introduce the policy of knocking on doors to deliver notice of claim and reminder letters, to hold a series of discussions and to provide the opportunity to pay in regular and consistent installments before taking legal actions if the defaulter still remains stubborn.
The District and Land Office also strives to increase tax collection involving the method by identifying and isolating all outstanding ownership problems for follow-up action, to open out-of-office collection counters in rural areas, opening counters during break hours and to add channels or online payment methods as well as payment counters at Local Authorities.
Abdul Khalid said that other measures taken was also to establish a State Government Cash Management Committee to ensure the management of excess cash is more efficient and would provide optimum benefits.
“If during the BN administration two mosques can be built, today at the same cost we can build three due to the increase in savings and revenue collection,” he said.
