SHAH ALAM, 13 Nov: Since flash floods often occur in several places in Klang, the Selangor Government announced an immediate action to implement flood mitigation works and to upgrade the drainage system to solve the problem.
The project to ensure the well-being of the residents in Klang will involve funds amounting to RM37,984,454.45, which is provided for five major projects in the district.
The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that the amount includes an allocation of RM12.4 million from the State Government, which is channeled through the Selangor State Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), while the remainder RM25.5 million is provided by the Federal Government.
“Although this is the responsibility of the Federal Government, the State Government will also take responsibility and provide allocations of an amount we can afford.
“A part of the project is expected to be completed in mid-2014, and several other projects will complete in April 2015,” said Abdul Khalid in a press conference after chairing the Selangor State Government Executive Councillors Meeting here at the State Government Secretariat Office today.
The five major projects are to upgrade the drainage system to overcome flash floods in Klang, and is funded by the Federal Government.
While four projects which are funded by the State Government are the flood mitigation project at Jalan Papan, Pandamaran, to upgrade the drainage system in Kampung Teluk Menegun, the upgrading of the drainage system in Sungai Aur Fasa 4, and to build a diversion for Sungai Rasah to Tasik Ladam Sungai Klang, as well as other related works.
In addition, the State Government is also providing additional funds of RM2.7 million for 23 small projects involving the widening of the Borrowpit, dredging and cleaning of the river, and log boom maintenance.
Also, projects to excavate trenches in villages, strengthening and stabilisation of river banks, dredging and deepening of retention ponds and others, are expected to be completed by the end of this year.
“The State Government is very concerned about the flooding problems and the hardships of residents in areas that experience frequent flooding such as Taman Sentosa, Rantau Panjang, Sungai Udang, Telok Pulai, Pandamaran, Taman Chi Liung, Bayu Perdana, a part of the Port Klang town, Bandar Putri and Padang Jawa, as well as its surrounding areas,” added Abdul Khalid.
The State Government hopes that with the implementation of the flood mitigation project in Klang, the problem of flash floods that often hit the Klang district over the years can be solved.
