No need for rationing as water is enough, long-term plan in the pipeline

SHAH ALAM, 8 Aug: In order to ensure that the water supply in Selangor is adequate for the needs of the people, the State Government rejects any decision based on political interests regarding the water issue.

Instead, the Selangor Executive Councillor in charge of Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi, said that water rationing will only be implemented in the interest of the people of Selangor for the long term.

He explained that this is proven when the State Government implemented water rationing several months ago despite realising that the move could give a negative perception in politics.

“We are not only thinking about sufficient water supply for a day or a week or two, but in facing the prolonged drought, we are thinking about the water supply until next year.

“At the present time, the water supply is enough so there is no need for rationing. But we also expect to face the El Niño next year,” said Dr Ahmad Yunus when contacted by Selangor Kini.

In addition to that, the State Government is also developing a long-term plan for the increasing water needs every year.

He explained that if political interest is taken into consideration, then certainly no water rationing measures will be taken despite realising that the water supply will be parched.

Prior to this, the Selangor State Government implemented scheduled water rationing at all zones in Selangor.

The move resulted in the State Government being attacked by some parties for political interest without regard to the need for efficient water management for continuous supply.
