PAS Youth urges government to implement automatic voting registration

KUALA LUMPUR 30 Oct: The Malaysian PAS Youth submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister to urge the government to implement automatic voter registration when a person reaches 21 years of age, starting today.

The submission was made through the Auto 21 Committee which is led by the PAS Youth Election Director, Mohd Sany Hamzan, to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, in Parliament today.

Also present during the submission was the Malaysian PAS Youth Chief, Suhaizan Kaiat.

The Auto 21 Committee is under the Youth Election Department and the Malaysian PAS Muslimat Council.

PAS Parliamentarians, including Datuk Mahfuz Omar (Pokok Sena), Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (Rantau Panjang) and Idris Ahmad (Bukit Gantang) were also present during the submission of the memorandum.

When Sany was speaking to reporters, he said that the initiative is seen as reducing national expenditure in the voter registration process because it is automatic, thus saving manpower and time.

He said that the automatic registration is also expected to increase the percentage of people who go out to vote.

Apart from that, he said, the implementation is also seen as easier with cooperation from the National Registration Department (NRD) to obtain the data of citizens who have reached 21 years of age.

“The data list will be processed by the EC to be registered as new voters. It is safer from manipulation by irresponsible parties,” he said, quoted from Harakah Daily.

Meanwhile, Shahidan, when commenting of the matter, said that the government has to look at several matters before implementing the suggestion.

He said that the implementation of the automatic registration involves many agencies, especially the country’s citizen record.

“There are some things that need to be updated, it only involved records. We are not rejecting the implementation,” he said.
