Ready to face El Nino, monitor fire-prone areas

BESTARI JAYA, 2 June: Preparation to face the El Nino phenomenon that is expected to begin in the middle of this year will be enhanced, especially in fire-prone areas.

The Exco for Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs, Elizabeth Wong, said that this is through the action plan to face the phenomenon, especially peat fires in the state.

“This year, the El Nino is expected to hit Asia-Pacific so we will have to continue and intensify the preparations in facing this phenomenon,” she told Selangor Kini.

Prior to this, the Selangor government spent RM1.04 million to purchase the latest technology to put out peat fires, Peat Firex, to ensure that it can be controlled in advance before spreading more widely.

She said that a special committee can be activated any time together with all agencies in facing teat fires.

“We want to move quickly through this committee in order to prevent worse fires.

“We are also taking into account a variety of ways including installing a pipeline of about five kilometres to facilitate fire fighting.

“We also have a standard operating procedure (SPO) to enter the fire quickly. Compared to seven years ago, we have improved a lot,” she said.
