Ammonia contamination interferes with the operation at the Bukit Tampoi WTP

SHAH ALAM, 19 Mar: Immediate action was taken following the cessation of operations at the bukit Tampoi Water Treatment Plant (WTP) due to ammonia contamination of Sungai Langat, starting at 2 pm today.

The Exco for Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Zaidy Abdul Talib, said that the state government, among others, is releasing water at the Langat Dam at 250 million litres per day (MLD).

“This action is ti increase the flow rate and the dilution factor in Sungai Langat.

“We are also conducting ingress water discharge via the raw water channelling tunnel from Pahang of 35 MLD,” he said in a statement late last night.

In addition, Zaidy said that Indah Water Consortium (IWK) has been ordered to monitor all sewage treatment plants (STP) under their supervision to lower ammonia emissions.

He said that the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has also been contacted to conduct a review on private STPs.

Other measures, including the installation of water pumps for the water pumping operations from Sungai Langat to the Bukit Tampoi Reservoir and then to the intake, will be carried out immediately.

“All parties involved are working hard to ensure this situations and the water supply around the vicinity of Kuala Langat recovered.

“The state government regrets this incident and called on all parties to cooperate in the effort to address this issue in an integrated manner,” he said.

Yesterday, the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) received information from Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd (PNSB) regarding the improvement of the ammonia parameters in Sungai Langat.

In relation to that, the Bukit Tampoi LRA reduced the raw pumping amount to 18 MLD from 37 MLD and stopped the plant at 2 pm when the ammonia readings reached 4.2 ppm.
