ATSB: No big tidal wave expected

SHAH ALAM, OCT 20: The high tide phenomenon which hit several states last Friday has ended on October 19, according to Astronautic Technology (M) Sdn Bhd (ATSB).

Chief Executive Officer Datuk Dr Ahmad Sabirin Arshad said so far there seems no probability of a second tidal wave expected any time soon.

However, he said that a recurrence is expected at the end of the year when the earth, sun and moon are in an exact in a parallel position, causing gravitational pull.

“This is the cause of high tide, but the situation will be more or less the same as this time round, but will be worse if coupled with heavy rain,” reported Bernama.

On October 15, the phenomenon hit several coastal areas in Selangor.

Prior to this, the State Government had allocated a total of RM4.3 million to repair bunds that were damaged due to high tide in September.

On October 19, 4 temporary flood relief centres in Sabak Bernam were closed when the affected areas were found to be safe for victims to return home.

Health, Welfare, Women and Family Development Exco Dr Daroyah Alwi named the 4 centres as Dewan Sungai Air Tawar, Dewan Parit Baru, Dewan Seri Sekinchan and Dewan Sri Bernam in Sungai Besar.

She said the decision was made after Disaster District Committee meeting convened and all victims were allowed to return to their homes beginning 12 noon.
