KLANG, 23 Sept: The Assemblyman for Bukit Antarabangsa, Mohamed Azmin Ali, was sworn in as the 15th Chief Minister of Selangor in front of the Sultan of Selangor at Istana Alam Shah, Klang, at 10.42 this morning.
The special car Mohamed Azmin Ali was in was seen entering Istana Alam Shah at 8.30 this morning.
Mohamed Azmin was seen clothed in a black Baju Melayu and read 10 pledges while holding the Lembing Sembuana.
He then signed the appointment letter for the position as Chief Minister while being witnessed by the Shah Alam High Court Judge, Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah.
Also present at the swearing in ceremony was his wife, Syamsidar Taharin; the Speaker of the Selangor State Assembly, Hannah Yeoh, and four Selangor State Executive Council Members.
Mohamed Azmin who is the Deputy President of PKR was born on 25 August 1964, is 50 years of age and has six children.
Mohamed Azmin holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Minnesota, USA, and a year later he completed his Master’s Degree in Education at the same institute. He also attended an executive training programme at the University of Oxford.
The press conference is scheduled to take place at 2 pm today at Mohamed Azmin’s mother’s house in Hulu Kelang.
Mohamed Azmin received the appointment letter from the Palace yesterday to replace Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, solving the mystery on who would lead the richest state in Malaysia today.
Yesterday, PKR and DAP also unanimously supported Mohamed Azmin by giving the majority support to him.
Both parties previously sent only one name, the President of PKR, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and were reprimanded by the Palace who wanted more than two names from each party.
The Selangor Palace explained that the delay in the appointment of the Chief Minister of Selangor was due to internal turmoil in PKR and disagreement of parties in Pakatan Rakyat in nominating the candidate for Chief Minister.
In a statement today, the Selangor Sultan’s Private Secretary, Datuk Munir Bani, said that the refusal by DAP and PKR to comply with the orders from the Palace on August 27 to nominate more than two names, complicated the Sultan’s actions to a point where he had to examine other candidates in the parties who were not nominated.
According to him, Mohamed Azmin was chosen because the Sultan considered the Pakatan Rakyat consensus on the Selangor Chief Minister’s seat and believes that he is the best option to receive support from all parties.
PAS stated that they will abide by the Sultan of Selangor’s choice.
