BLB attack: Farmers’ lost opportunities

BY AFIX REDZUAN

SEKINCHAN, DEC 5: Sekinchan paddy farmers are facing trying times after the Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB) attack on the second season of harvest this year.

Lim Mau Soon, 43 who had already been cultivating the fields for a long time, said that strong winds on the 46th day resulted in the destruction of seven lots of rice crops.

According to him, the effect of the wind attack caused the paddy to wilt and not be able to produce normally.

“While we were placing the fertilizer, the winds blew strongly and caused the soft leaves to brushed against each other and infect. The bacteria will continue to spread,” he said.

He said the BLB attack had resulted in losses of about RM7,000 per lot.

Lim said that Sekinchan farmers hope the government can lend aid and any form of support to ease their burdens on the start of the new planting season next year.
