BSM Case: JAIS instructed to seek advice from Exco and Legal Advisors

SHAH ALAM, 13 June: The State Government welcomes the statement by the Attorney-General, Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, who decided that there is no case against the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) and no prosecution will be made.

For that, the Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that the State Government will assist the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) return all items in relation to the case.

He said that the decision was based on the advice of the State Legal Advisor to take necessary measures in accordance with the law in handling case exhibits taken by JAIS from BSM.

“In relation to that, the Chairman for the Standing Committee on Islamic Affairs, Agriculture Modernisation and Rural Development, Salehen Mukhyi, and the Selangor State Legal Advisor, Datuk Nik Suhaimi Nik Sulaiman, have been instructed to assist JAIS.

“Salehen Mukhyi and JAIS have been asked to hold further discussions with the parties involved, especially BSM, to resolve the disagreements amicably and fairly for the sake of religious harmony claimed by Islam and other religions.

“The State Government also thanks the Attorney-General’s Office for their advice and also to BSM for providing good cooperation to JAIS while investigations were carried out,” he said in a statement.

In a statement, Abdul Gani said that the case involving the seizure of Bibles was closed and it is up to JAIS to take further action in accordance with the law.

He said that the Attorney-General’s Office reviewed the facts and statements in the investigation papers and decided that the books seized were not published under Section 9(1)(a) of the Non-Muslim Enactment (Control and Development Among Muslims) 1988.

Earlier this year, JAIS seized about 300 Malay language Bibles from the BSM premises in Petaling Jaya.

The State Government then referred it to the Attorney-General (AG) on the advice of the state legal officer while waiting for further decision.
