DEIG advised to have transparency & accountability

SHAH ALAM, 18 Aug: The establishment of the Darul Ehsan Investment Group (DEIG) under the company act has caused the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) to not know the developments of the entity’s investment.

Budiman Mohd Zohdi (BN-Sungai Panjang) said that Menteri Besar incorporated (MBI) should be structured in the event of a problem instead of establishing DEIG.

“Why not structure it under MBI instead of setting up an entity registered under the companies act to manage investment? This raises our concerns.

“When established under a company, it does not have to be audited by the state government and there is no responsibility to report it to the Selangor State Assembly,” he said during a press conference at the Annex Building Lobby.

He said that as a company, DEIG needs a balance of governance as it can take out loans like other companies.

Touching on the example given by Tan Sri Abdul Khalid (Independent-Port Klang) about the fate of DEIG that may become like 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), he said that it is only his personal opinion.

“That is Tan Sri Abdul Khalid’s example, ask his opinion. If you ask me about concerns, I am not worried because they are different (DEIG and 1MDB),” he said.

At the same time, Datuk Shamsudin Lias (BN-Sungai Burong) said that what is important in the new entity is that there has to be accountability and it must be direct with the state government.

Apart from that, he said that the establishment of DEIG must be discussed at the DNS level.

“It is proposed for an enactment to be created to bind and control DEIG under more accountable provisions because it involves state government investment,” he said.
