Dr Maszlee: Islam in politics create more enemies

PETALING JAYA, 3 Nov: Local and International Political Analyst, Dr Maszlee Malik, believes that the future lies in the hands of public disclosure and not political Islamist parties.

This is because more Islamic political parties are exclusive or comprised of certain people.

“When we put Islam in politics, we create more enemies than friends,” he said at the World Forum For Muslim Democrats.

In fact, he said that the Islamic movement should avoid creating the image of an Islam that is exclusive.

This is because the Prophet himself was not a leader who sought to create an exclusionary Islamic state identity.

In the meantime, Maszlee said that Islamic political parties are faced with the dilemma of whether to separate parts of their organisation that focuses on preaching and political work.

This situation is faced by political parties like the Ennahda Tunisia.

Prior to that, the former ASEAN Secretary-General, Dr Surin Pitsuwan, said that tolerance and humility are two important features that should be included in a Muslim Democrat.

He said that Islam is a religion that emphasises peace.
