Federal Constitution Guarantees the Right to Assemble

KUALA LUMPUR, 27 Dec: The assembly to object to the increased cost of living on the 2014 New Year’s Eve at Dataran Merdeka is guaranteed by the Federal Constitution.

“This assembly organised by the people is a peaceful assembly, which is allowed according to article 10 of the Constitution of Malaysia,” said the 3112 Movement Coalition and the Lower Cost of Living Movement (Turun) in a joint statement today.

The three demands of the coalition are to urge the government to reduce the cause of the increase in cost of living, to not betray promises made prior to the 13th General Election and to stop wastage and leakages which have to be shouldered by the people.

The coalition stressed that the assembly on New Year’s Eve is a signal to the government that the people will not remain silent when being bullied by the rulers.

“It is time the people fight for their fate on their own land,” they said, quoted from Keadilan Daily.

The 3112 Movement Coalition and Turun stressed that the assembly which will take place on 31 December has nothing to do with an ‘assembly to overthrow the government’ as accused by irresponsible quarters.

“We are asking the public to join, crossing boundaries of party politics and religious believes, because no one is exempt from the unjust policies introduced by the government.

At the same time, the coalition informed that they will gather at three locations, at Sogo, Masjid Jamek and Central Market, at 9pm before moving to Dataran Merdeka.
