Fuziah Expresses Concern that the Flood Will Spread Radioactive Material from the LYNAS Plant

SHAH ALAM, 13 Dec: The terrible floods which hit Kuantan recently raised concern on if the flood would spread radioactive material from the LYNAS Plant in Gebeng.

The Member of Parliament for Kuantan, Fuziah Salleh, said that she is worried that the radioactive material dissolved in the flood and has spread all over.

She said that the radiation levels of the radioactive materials in LYNAS have reduced from 6.2 Becquerel per gram (Bq/g) to 1Bq/g so that the material is no longer considered radioactive.

“The classification of the radiation danger levels has been diluted by the government so that it is below the danger level.

“The effect remains the same. In fact, it is worse because the diluted materials will become more and spread everywhere,” said Fuziah, quoted from Keadilan Daily.

Fuziah said that although it is no longer classified as radioactive, the amount of radioactive material that contaminates the ground remains the same.

“This is is an unethical move done to our environment,” she said.

She is also disappointed when the Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, refused to answer questions put by journalists regarding the state of the LYNAS plant during the flood.

“The people want an explanation. Instead of silence from the minister who seems to consider this issue as not important,” she said.
