GERAMM: Investigate scandal and not blame the media

SHAH ALAM, 25 June: The federal government should not target media agencies as the reporters by pressuring them following the disclosure of misconduct.

The Malaysian media change pressure group, Angry Media Movement (GERAMM), in a statement, urged the government to investigate the serious allegations reported by the media.

According to them, the government should stop wasting public money in the effort to threaten, scare and silence the media which is only reporting the news as a result of extensive leak and spread of information about it.

“The government should look into the responsibility and accountability that is more important to the people; investigation allegations, improving situations and punishing those guilty,” they said today.

GERAMM explained that Prime Minister Najib Razak blamed the media in reporting the corruption allegations involving the purchase of a building the the People’s Trust Council (MARA) in Melbourne, Australia.

In fact, the Home Affairs Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, warned several media agencies regarding the alleged use of data that was ‘changed’ in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

“The action against the media that supposedly ‘distorted’ is a betrayal of the people’s trust, and only exacerbates Malaysia in the eyes of the world,” they added.
