JAKIM should be firm, test all brands with halal certification

PETALING JAYA, 30 May: The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) have been urged to test all brands of food with the halal certification.

The Executive Councillor for Tourism, Consumer Affairs and Environment, Elizabeth Wong, said that the move is to ensure the halal authenticity of a product, especially for Muslim consumers.

She said that the technology available today allows the content of a product to be identified.

“It is hoped that the latest issue regarding Cadbury can be addressed firmly and fairly for all parties, including the manufacturers themselves.

“At the same time, JAKIM and the MOH have also been urged to act quickly and identify the source of the contamination, as previously said.

“What is important for Muslim consumers is they want the halal assurance. In the event of such cases, it would raise doubts,” she told Selangor Kini.

She was met after she inaugurated the closing ceremony of the International Children’s Storytelling Camp at the Sri Damansara Club yesterday.

On May 24, two Cadbury products, the Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut and the Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond, had been confirmed by the MOH to contain pig DNA.

The Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr S.Sburamaniam, in a response, said that he did not rule out that there the existence of pig DNA in the Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut and Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond could be because of contamination along the food production chain.

The findings were greeted with mix reactions, among them was from a non-governmental organisation (NGO), the Allied Coordinating Committee of Islamic NGOs (ACCIN), who wanted the chocolate manufacturer to bear the cost of cleaning the blood of Muslims who are the two chocolate products.
