Johor Assemblymen Proposes for Johor to Emulate Selangor’s Democratic Practices

SHAH ALAM, 16 Apr: The study visit by the Johor Assemblymen delegation said that the running of the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) was in a more democratic atmosphere compared to the Johor State Assembly (NDJ).

The DNJ Opposition Leader, Dr Boo Chen Hau, said that this situation is clearly different when Assemblymen from the opposition in Johor are not given the opportunity to present their views, as practiced in the Selangor Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency (SELCAT).

“The DNS under Pakatan Rakyat (PR) showed a good example and is impressive. The Yang Berhormat here, and as informed by Madam Speaker, Hannah Yeoh, in the DNS there are nine committees, including the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and also the SELCAT to discuss land issues and also local governments.

“I will bring up a proposal in the DNJ to have a select committee comprising of both parties, Barisan Nasional and PR, in order to discuss various issues in-depth which can benefit the people of Johor.

“Thanks to YB Hannah Yeoh for willing to invite us,” he said in a press conference at the DNS Speaker’s Office today.

He added that among the issues that needed to be addressed includes the Iskandar Malaysia Development involving foreigners owning property and the purging of the mangrove forest reserves in the state.

The Assemblyman for Penggaram, Gan Peck Cheng, said that unlike the DNJ, she found that Assemblymen in Selangor from the opposition are also given the opportunity to be members of select committees and bring up motions and their views transparently.

Today, a delegation of Johor Assemblymen from the opposition will be having a study visit to view the running of the DNS session.

The delegation includes the Yong Peng Assemblywoman, Chew Peck Choo; the Assemblyman for Pengkalan Rinting, Cheo Yee How and several other Assemblymen.
