Kajang amenities upgraded to overcome flood

KAJANG, 15 Oct: The flood problem which often happens in Kajang is expected to be less in the future following the continuous upgrading carried out by the local authorities in the area over the past few years.

The Assemblywoman for Kajang, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, said that the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) and the Hulu Langat Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) has been carrying out a lot of upgrading on the amenities in the city and what is happening now is far different compared to previously.

“This is a continuous process and the condition is far better compares to in 2011. The flash flood that happened on September 29 was managed to be overcome by MPKj and other authorities in about 20 minutes,” she said after a meeting with MPKj and the Hulu Langat JPS today.

Wan Azizah said that the outcome of the meeting has informed that the Hulu Langat JPS has readied an action plan to overcome the problem and through several phases to be implemented.

She said that the discussion will be carried out with traders around the area of the Sungai Jerlok riverbank because the reclamation and upgrading of the river will be carried out later on.

“Certain areas, especially the school behind the Kajang Plaza, will be upgraded and the landowners have agreed to that. JPS will design it while MPKj will approve the licence and monitor the implementation,” she said.

Wan Azizah also hopes that the community will cooperate by taking care of the cleanliness and throw rubbish at the appropriate area.

The engineer of the Hulu Langat JPS, Roslan Shamsuddin, said that the first phase of upgrading is underway; the deviation of the river in Kajang to Sungai Langat, meanwhile the second phase involves the upgrading of the bridge at the Kajang market.

At about 4.30 pm on September 29, heavy rain caused flooding in the area and the last time Kajang was hit by floods was in 2011.

Wan Azizah said that she will manage the meeting between the Kajang Assemblyman’s Office, MPKj and the Selangor Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) to discuss the problem and short and long term solutions for the flash floods.
