Karpal Fined RM4,000 on Charges of Inciting

KUALA LUMPUR, 11 Mar: The DAP Chairman, Karpal Singh, was fined RM4,000 today by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on charges of inciting to the Sultan of Perak during the constitutional crisis in 2009.

The judgement was passed by Justice Azman Abdullah after studying the case facts and public interests, including Karpal’s health condition.

PR leaders also filled today’s courtroom when waiting for the sentence by the court.

Among them was the PKR de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the DAP Advisor, Lim Kit Siang, the Deputy President of PAS, Mohamad Sabu, and the PAS Secretary-General, Datuk Mustafa Ali, who appeared to provide moral support to Karpal.

The wheelchair-bound Karpal Singh is the second supreme leader of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) who was sentenced this week after the PKR de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, was convicted on the charge of the case involving his former aide last week.

During the appeal process this morning, Karpal’s lawyer, who is also his son, Gobind Singh, asked for the Kuala Lumpur High Court to not sentence his father to jail because of his health and his position as a Member of Parliament.

On 21 February, Karpal was found guilty of issuing an inciting statement that action can be taken against the Sutan of Perak following Mohd Nizar Jamaludin’s change as the Chief Minister on 2009.

Karpal faces a sentence of up to RM5,000 in fine or three years in prison, or both.
