Khalid Samad asked for forgiveness, shocked by Sultan’s anger

SHAH ALAM, 17 July: The Member of Parliament for Shah Alam, Khalid Samad, suggested for the State Government to review the possibility for the executive power to be withdrawn from the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) to protect the good reputation of the agency and the Selangor Sultan, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

He said that the proposal was not submitted to challenge the power of the Selangor Sultan as the head of Islam in the state or MAIS as his advisor in exercising their duties.

He also asked for the Sultan’s forgiveness is for his outspokenness in issuing a statement of wanting the executive power to be eliminated and asked to go before him to explain what his statement meant.

“The Sultan and MAIS’ position remains unchanged as the authority in Islam when acting as the policymaker in all matters relating to Islam in Selangor.

“The proposed changes are merely in the aspect of the execution, where policies determined by the Sultan through MAIS are submitted to the State Government, under the Religious Executive Councillor’s portfolio, to be implemented,” he said during a press conference in response to the controversy regarding the ‘anger’ of the Sultan of Selangor against him.

He said that the proposal was made because previously, various problems arose involving the aspects of implementation, causing many people to be unsatisfied.

He said that when the implementation is submitted to the government, any problems, including the anger of some quarters, will be directed to the Religious Executive Councillor and the State Government, and not to the Sultan or MAIS.

Earlier, the Sultan of Selangor expressed his anger against Khalid Samad for being rude and ignorant in issuing a statement on MAIS.

He considers the questions raised by Khalid regarding MAIS as being irresponsible and showing resistance towards his authority as the head of Islam in Selangor.

Khalid also expressed surprise over the Sultan’s anger, especially when he met the Sultan on June 30 at an Iftar at the State Mosque.
