SHAH ALAM, 4 Apr: Malaysians are urged to choose leaders who obey the people and not act like rulers of the past in the 13th General Elections (GE-13).

This is because according to historian, Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim, the future leaders are politicians who will work for the people who chose them.

“Those who give their votes to the candidate and if this candidate wins, the candidate must always serve the voters, not people with titles.

“Even the people, as voters, do not understand. When they choose a politician, they then respect that politician like rulers of old.

“In fact those elected should always obey the people,” he said when contacted by TV Selangor.

Voters are also reminded to carefully select the candidates in the GE-13 and to not elect leaders who prefer to use their power for themselves, their families and their cronies.

When touching on the issue of democracy in this country, Dr Kay Kim added that like in Asian and African countries, the people and leaders of Malaysia do not respect the law and fail to understand democracy well as compared with western countries.

“In the west, from young they are educated about the belief of democracy and how it should be implemented as well as the importance of the law.

“In most Asian and African countries, they do not understand the law and they do not understand how democracy should be implemented,” said Dr Kay Kim.

Previously, there have been many reports of political violence, mainly against Pakatan Rakyat parties and the attempts to suppress the voices of the people through violations of laws and electoral manipulation.

Among the attacks were the attacks on the Freedom Tour buses, the Welfare Country trailer, PR talks in Johor, Malacca and Negeri Sembilan and student activists in Pekan, Pahang.
