KUALA LUMPUR, 27 Dec: The Chairman of the Anti Postal Summons Campaign (KASE) Datuk Mahfuz Omar has questioned the Cabinet’s action to continue the process of issuing AES summons despite the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) postponement of court proceedings.
According to him, this action can be seen as efforts to protect the interests of cronies who have a stake in the concession companies that operate the automated enforcement system (AES).
“Is the government that worried about delaying the ASE operations to safeguard the interests of certain parties?
“Does the government want to protect the interests of Tan Sri Azman Yahya who is part of several government GLCs including Khazanah Naional?
“I mentioned the matter because ATES Sdn Bhd (a company handling AES) is 67.74 percent owned by a company called Angsana Tiara Sdn Bhd.
“66.60 percent of Angsana shares is owned by Tan Sri Azman Yahya.
The Pokok Sena MP explained that the company has accumulated losses of RM781 million.
Mahfuz also claims that the AES was given as an effort to restore the company.
Mahfuz frimly said that after the court proceedings were adjourned, the Road and Transport Department (JPJ) should have stopped issuing new AES summons and to return paid AES summons.
“I am ready to debate with a minister about the implementation of the AES,” Mahfuz challenged.
Yesterday, it was reported that the Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kog Cho Ha, said that the AES summons will continue to be issues although court proceedings have been postponed.
Cho Ha also acknowledges that the AES summons are problematic from the legal point of view and that his ministry is looking into ways to resolve the matter.
So far, almost 300,000 summonses have been issued since the implementation of AES on September 23.
