MetMalaysia: Cloud Seeding if Country Experiences Drought

SHAH ALAM, 20 Feb: The cloud seeding operation will only be implemented if the country is declared to be experiencing drought.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said that it can also be done if requested by certain parties who agree to bear the cost of implementation.

“All aspects are taken into account for declaration, involving the weather conditions, river currents and water levels in dams and groundwater, respectively monitored by MetMalaysia, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and the Malaysian Mineral and Geoscience Department (MGD),” he explained in a statement to Selangor Kini.

Prior to this, the Selangor Government planned to use cloud seeding as a method to improve the water capacity in dams affected by the hot and dry weather.

The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that the move will be carried out next week if the hot and dry weather continues.

He said that the State Government has provided allocations of RM300,000 to RM00,000 to carry out this initiative.

The hot and dry weather at the moment is due to the absence of rain for long periods in many areas, especially in Peninsular Malaysia.

MetMalaysia also reported that the small amount of clouds in the day has also caused the sun to blaze directly on the grounds, thus causing the air temperature to rise rapidly.

“The hot weather experienced by Peninsular Malaysia was detected to have begun in early February and is expected to end in mid-March 2014, when the Northeast Monsoon season is over,” he said.
