MRT 2 takes into account the number of passengers & the environment

DAMANSARA, 29 Apr: Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Corp confirmed that the re-routing of the Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya (MRT 2) route will be based on the number of passengers and environmental factors.

MRT Corp’s Strategic Communication and Public Relations Director, Mahmood Abdul Razak, said that the re-routing will allow MRT 2 to be connected with the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail (HSR), which will be located in Bandar Malaysia.

Mahmood also denied allegations that the move was taken on the government’s orders to stimulate projects by 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

“The re-routing through Bandar Malaysia is our own initiative compared to the previous proposal, which is to go through Pandan and Cheras, which will cause there to be a higher number of passengers.

“This re-routing will also enable better connectivity with other train operators,” he said during a press conference at the MRT Information Centre today.

On March 30, the Member of Parliament for Petaling Jaya, Tony Pua, questioned the decision to re-route the project to pass through Bandar Malaysia instead of Cheras and Pandan.

The 52.2 kilometre (km) MRT 2 project will connect Sungai Buloh to Putrajaya through Serdang using underground and elevated routes.

It involves 36 stations with 25 elevated routes (38.7 km) and 11 underground (13.5 km) starting from the Damansara Damai station and ending at the Putrajaya Central station and also a small depot will be provided at the Serdang station.
