N25 By-Election: Proposal to Place Lee Chong Wei Proves BN’s Lack in Leaders

SHAH ALAM, 2 Feb: The proposal by Barisan Nasional (BN) to place the number one world badminton champion, Datuk Lee Chong Wei, as their candidate in the Kajang by-election is absurd and ridiculous.

The National DAP Vice Chairperson, Teresa Kok, said that the proposal not only shows that BN and MCA cannot find a strong candidate to face Anwar Ibrahim, but it has to stoop so low to use the fame of Lee Chong-Wei as political digit to save BN in this by-election.

She said that BN is also acting over the top by willing to drag Chong Wei as their political tool.

“The reason for the Padang Besar UMNO Division Chief to suggest Lee Chong Wei was because he failed to see any great candidate in MCA that can defeat Anwar Ibrahim.

“In the end, they want to use Chong Wei’s popularity to save them in the Kajang by-election,” she said in a statement.

Previously, Padan Besar Umno Chief, Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin proposed for Chong Wei to be the candidate to represent BN was on grounds that MCA does not have a leader who can rival Anwar.

Teresa Kok, who is also the Member of Parliament for Seputeh, said that the proposal shows that they do not appreciate Ching Wei who is still fighting so hard in many badminton competitions in order to bring fame for Malaysia.

“I was surprised to see Liow Tiong Lai, the new MCA President said his party will consider this proposal.

“The proposal from an UMNO Division Chief and then supported by MCA has insulted Lee Chong Wei as the world class badminton player.

“Sports and politics are two different fields altogether. A person who is a talent in sports is not necessarily a talent in politics,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Khairy Jamaluddin, insisted that he will not allow that from happening.

Khairy wrote on his Twitter that Lee is a “national treasure” and should not be touched for political purposes.
