Najib a Huge Liar, ‘Forgets’ Promise to Abolish Sedition Act

SHAH ALAM, 8 May: DAP leaders have slammed the move by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, of using the Sedition Act to disable and discredit some leaders of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) despite promising to abolish the law in 2012.

DAP Advisor, Lim Kit Siang, said that Najib’s move of deliberately ‘forgetting’ his promise is meant to serve as a warning to all critics, whether the Pakatan Rakyat, civil society or common citizenry that they face the possibility of being charged under sedition for legitimate criticism of the Barisan Nasional government for its failures and weaknesses.

“The beginning of the second year of Najib’s second administration as Prime Minister could not have started on a more ominous note, heralding that Malaysia is heading for a new dark age where all the grandiloquent pledges and slogans of 1Malaysia, World’s Best Democracy and Government Transformation Programme would be consigned to the dustbins of history and replaced by undemocratic, repressive, unjust and draconian rule.

“Malaysians are certainly disappointed with the Prime Minister’s policy,” he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, the DAP Publicity Secretary, Tony Pua, in a short statement on Facebook, considers Najib a ‘hypocrite’ because he had promised to the people to repeal the draconian law.

He said that it is more ironic because the promise was announced to the whole world in a interview with international media in London, i July 2013.

“However, ever since the proposed repeal was announced, Malaysians have witnessed a record number of Pakatan Rakyat politicians and civil activists charged under the Sedition Act, the completely opposite of what Najib promised the people. Such a huge, world-class lie by Najib,” he said.

On July 11, 2012, Najib announced that he will abolish the Sedition Act after a meeting with the Attorney-General’s Office.

He then reiterated the same promise in July 2013 during an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), by saying that the act will be replaced with the National Harmony Act.
