SHAH ALAM, 26 Aug: The Pahang-Selangor Raw Water Transfer Project (PAMPS) of 500 million litres per day (MLD) from Sungai Semantan, Pahang, to Sungai Langat, was successfully implemented for the first time on August 24.
The Exco for Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Agricultural Modernisation and Agro-Based Industries, Zaidy Abdul Talib, said that the implementation is aimed at increasing water resources in the Langat Basin.
“On August 24 (10.16pm), PAMPS for the first time operated when the capacity of the Sungai Langat Dam dropped to 44.24 percent.
“A total of 300 MLD of water was pumped into Sungai Langat through the outfall tunnel at 8.30 am yesterday,” he said in a statement to Selangor Kini.
PAMPS is a project that covers the transfer of raw water at a capacity of 1,890 MLD from Sungai Semantan, Pahang, through a 44 kilometre tunnel directly to the Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant.
However, the construction of the Langat 2 WTP is expected to be fully completed in 2019.
The charge of RM50,000 (RM0.10 per cubic meter) that is channelled will be paid by the Selangor government to Pahang as per the agreement signed previously.
The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) will coordinate the channelling of the raw water in Selangor and the Water Regulatory Body (BKSA) will do so in Pahang.
Meanwhile, the pumping operation will be executed by contractors appointed by the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA).
Zaidy said that the initial distribution of raw water is a mitigation measure intended to reduce the release of water from the Sungai Langat Dam which is now at a capacity of 45.07 percent.
“With this, the release from the Langat Dam and the pumping from the Semenyih Dam will be stopped.
“It is also a measure to combat water shortage due to stop work at main WTPs in Sungai Langat, namely Cheras WTP, Batu 11 and the Bukit Tampoi WTP during drought due to the lack of dilution rates and also the increase of ammonia parameters in the water,” he said.
Selangor Kini understands that PAMPS is also responsible for addressing the issue of the decreasing water level at Sungai Langat which affects WTP where pumping cannot be carried out due to low river water levels.
The initial transfer of raw water from Pahang is believed to help address the issue while the Langat 2 WTP facilities are fully completed.
