Petaling Jaya man confirmed 8th Zika case

PUTRAJAYA, DEC 18: A man living in Petaling Jaya, Selangor has been confirmed to be infected with Zika on December 14, making him the eighth case in the country.

Health Director Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the 67-year-old patient suffered fever, vomiting, and diarrhoea on November 28 and sought initial treatment three days later at Tangling Clinic, Kuala Lumpur.

“The patient’s movements between November 14 and November 28 showed that he was in the vicinity of Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam and Perak.

“The patient’s immediate family will be tested and blood and urine samples taken to test for Zika as soon as the results are known,” he said in a statement.

Dr Noor Hisham said activities to control the spread of Zika was undertaen on December 11 involving the destruction of breeding grounds, larvae, health education and fogging at the patient’s residence and also where he visited.

From September 1 till December 14, eight positive cases of Zika in the country have been confirmed.

The National Public Health Lab and the Medical Research Institute found that 1,633 blood and urine samples from patients were negative for Zika.

The public is advised to ensure all locations indoors and outdoors are kept clean and free from Aedes.

In addition, preventive measures against mosquito bites should be taken by using repellent and covering exposed areas of the body.

Individuals exhibiting Zika symptoms like fever, headache, muscle aches and conjunctivitis and have travelled to countries infected with Zika should see a doctor immediately.
