Rafizi: 7% Malay ‘Swing’ Voters, PR Successfully Breaks Through 2 BN Strongholds

KAJANG, 24 Mar: The result of the Kajang by-election yesterday is considered a positive indication of Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) ability to win in the 14th General Election (GE14).

The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Strategy Director, Rafizi Ramli, said that the indication was proved when the poll results yesterday showed that Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) managed to increased Malay votes from five to seven percent.

“The results improved and the win in some voting districts are unexpected because if you look at the results today (Sunday), we won in all Malay areas except in two places, Sungai Kantan and Batu 10 Cheras.

“However, we managed to reduce BN’s victory in these two areas, for example in Sungai Kantan, we reduced them by two hundred votes.

“For the largest Malay voting district, which is Sungai Sekamat, we previously lost by over 200 votes, but now, we won 40 votes. This means that is a shift of about 300 votes from BN to PR.

“From rough analysis, five to seven percent of Malay voters shifted from BN to PR this time.A five to seven percent ‘swing’ is large enough. If there is a ‘swing’ in the GE by that much, it would mean that PR will win Putrajaya convincingly,” he told the media after the EC announced Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah as the winner.

Yesterday, the EC announced that Dr Wan Azizah won by a majority of 5,379 votes after receiving 16,741 votes compared to her challenger, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun from BN, who obtained 11,362 votes.

The results also show that the percentage of votes obtained by PR increased from 56.8 percent in the 13th General Election (GE13) to 59.7 percent in the by-election this time.
