Rompin by-election on May 5, May 7 for Permatang Pauh

SHAH ALAM, 10 Apr: The Rompin by-election will be held on May 5 following the death of the incumbent, Tan Sri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis, who died in a helicopter crash on April 4.

This was announced by the Chairman of the Election Commission (E), Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, during a press conference in Putrajaya today.

Prior to this, he said that the by-election may likely be held simultaneously with the Permatang Pauh by-election on May 7, but he confirmed that the date was unsuitable because it is a public holiday in Pahang.

“This does not prevent the EC from holding it ahead of Permatang Pauh, as long as it follows the conditions in Malaysia and other laws.

“Originally, we wanted to hold it simultaneously on May 7, but for Pahang it is Hol Day, a public holiday for the state, and many programmes have been arranged from afternoon to night involving the palace and heads of departments.

“If it is held on that date, it would not be appropriate,” he said, taken from a report by The Malaysian Insider.

Meanwhile, the nomination day has been set for April 24 and the early voting on April 30.
