Safwan Anang’s wife perseveres in tears

KUALA LUMPUR, 5 Sept: The wife of former student leader Muhammad Safwan Anang was strong despite being in tears when accepting the 10-month prison sentence her husband received when found guilty of sedition on May 13.

Masturah Abu Bakar, 25, could not hold back her tears when commenting on the sentence outside the Jalan Duta Sessions Court today.

“I support what my husband is doing. But for now, my child and I desperately need him. Our child is only 8 months old,” she said in tears.

Citing Malaysia Kini, Mastura appeared in court with their eight-month old daughter and was dressed in black.

She was unable to continue her speech as she was in tears and left the group of journalists after the brief statement.

Today, the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court sentenced Safwan, the former Chairman of Malaysian Student Solidarity (SMM), to ten months in prison on charges of sedition in a speech on May 13.

Judge Norsharidah Awang, who sentenced him under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, allowed the sentence to be postponed for the purpose of an appeal.

However, the previous bail of RM5,000 was raised to RM15,000.
