SHAH ALAM, 5 August: The Selangor Government has allocated RM552,500 for 338 athletes, team management and the Selangor contingent association which won a medal and brought honour to Selangor in the 16th Malaysian Games (Sukma).

Also present was the Exco for Youth and Sports, Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi and the Contingent Deputy Chief, Amiruddin Shari.

At the event, a total of 198 athletes received incentives totaling to RM451,000, while 40 sports management teams received incentives totaling to RM50,750 and 70 teams received incentives totaling to RM50,750.

Every athlete who won gold received incentives amounting to RM3,500, while RM2,000 was given to silver medalists, and bronze winners received RM1,000.

Meanwhile, sports management teams and associations each received RM1,000 for gold, RM750 for silver and RM500 for bronze.

Abdul Khalid said that the incentives given will hopefully provide motivation and encouragement to the Selangor contingent to maintain the title in the 17th Sukma which will be held in Perlis next year.

He also did not rule out the possibility of adding the existing provisions to RM5 million, if the contingent requires additional equipment and infrastructure.

“The State Government is aware that our provisions are less than other states, however, for us, it is not a huge allocation that determines victory but regular training and strong involvement provides the opportunity of victory.

“However, we will ask the Local Authorities and district offices to upgrade sports facilities and infrastructure for the convenience of our athletes,” he said in his speech.

In the recent Sukma championship, the Selangor contingent comprising of 477 athletes, officials, team managers and coaches emerged as the overall champion, eliminating the defending champion, Terengganu, after winning 23 gold medals, 17 silver and 30 bronze.

The success was the eight for Selangor after emerging as the overall champion in the 11th Sukma in Kedah in 2006.

The Sportsman from the 16th Sukma was also won by an artistic gymnastics athlete from Selangor, Danniel Iskandar Richard, who won three gold medals through the men’s individual event, the men’s team event and men’s pommel horse event, as well as two silver medals in tumbling and single crossbar.

Meanwhile, Danniel, 19, when met, expressed happiness on receiving the RM14,500 incentive.

“The incentive will be used properly. For me, it is a boost for me to pursue excellence.

“What is important after this is I will be preparing as best possible to face next year’s Sukma.

“And I hope that one day I can qualify for the Commonwealth Games,” he said.
