SMM: 2014 New Year’s Eve Turun Assembly is Just the Beginning

SHAH ALAM, 1 Jan: The assembly to protest against the increasing cost of living on the night of the 2014 New Year’s Eve celebration which managed to record an attendance of over 10,000 participants is the first sign from the people of this country to protest against the increasing prices of goods.

The Chairman of Student Solidarity Malaysia (SMM), Muhammed Bukhairy Sofian, said that students will continue to put pressure on the Umno-BN minority government.

“This is just the beginning stage. This is just a sign to the government so that they are aware that the people are suffering,” said Bukhary, quoted from Keadilan Daily.

“If the government still wants to implement the GST, they insist on continuing the increase in price of goods, we (students) will come to protest again and continue to put pressure on the government,” he said.

He said that the Federal Government used public funds for absurd programmes, such as the New Year’s Eve celebration, while at the same time, there are people suffering from natural disasters, such as flooding, in Pahang and Sarawak.

“The government has wasted too much of the people’s money. For example, to welcome the 2014 year, the government spent RM15 million.

“The RM15 million comes from the people. So, it should be channelled comprehensively for the welfare of the people.

“Not only for the new year (celebration),” he said.
