Sukma 2014: Defend Title, Selangor Targets 50 Gold Medals

SHAH ALAM, 4 Mar: Selangor has set a target of 50 gold medals for the 17th Malaysian Games (Sukma), which will be held in Perlis from 24 May to 4 June.

The Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) Executive Director, Shamsul Shahril Badliza Mohd Noor, said that the target depends on current performance and sportsmanship shown by athletes in the training over the past few months.

He said that Selangor is placing 500 athletes in the games which offer 396 gold medals in 24 sporting events in Perlis.

“Our mission is quite heavy this year, which is to defend the 2013 Sukma title.

“Selangor has earned eight victories since the sporting event was created, so through preparation in terms of training and equipment is in full swing,” he said in a Selangorku segment today.

In the 16th Sukma in Kuala Lumpur last year, Selangor was at the top with 23 gold medals, 16 silver and 28 bronze, while Terengganu came in second with 19 gold medals, 13 silver and 13 bronze.

The Federal Territory came in third with 15 gold medals, 19 silver and 26 bronze.

He said that Selangor only places ‘athletes who will definitely win medals’ to ensure that the victory since 1986 is retained.

Apart from depending on the tradition of obtaining medals in aquatics, athletics and cycling, he said that the contingent also hopes that gold medals can be added through weightlifting and wushu.

“Due to the high cost of this sport, Selangor only places athletes that will definitely win medals because we have the set merits,” he said.
