The Heat: GERAMM Urges MOHA to Apologise, Wear Red on Friday

SHAH ALAM, 21 Dec: The newly-formed Gerakan Media Marah (GERAMM) has urged all media practitioners to wear red clothing/paraphernalia every Friday as a symbol of solidarity to protest against the move by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) to suspend the weekly newspaper The Heat.

GERAMM (or the Movemement of Angry Media) in a statement today said that the group will be organising a public programme, which includes an hour-long campaign via social media platforms, ie. Facebook and Twitter, from 9.30pm to 10.30pm every day beginning this Monday, using the hashtag #theheat.

“GERAMM also reaches out to fellow journalists – including part-time writers and column writers as well as staff of media companies to join in its campaign to highlight issues pertaining to serious violation of media freedom.

“Friends of journalists and editors are also urged to start a campaign on their own initiative following the appropriateness of their respective organisations.

“Now we have no right to remain silent. It is time we protest against such violations,” said GERAMM secretariat.

GERAMM also called on the Home Ministry to cancel any action against The Heat and allow the weekly newspaper to resume publication.

The MOHA has also been urged to publicly apologise to The Heat and all media practitioners as well as media users for its violation against space for media freedom all this while.
