SHAH ALAM, 3 Sept: The increase in the number of female students at Public Institutes of Higher Learning (IPTA) at the moment is not surprising because they are certainly qualified to further their education based on the merits of examination results achieved.
The Chairman of the Malaysian Youth Lens (Lensa), Safwan Anang, said that there is no question of gender domination at IPTAs because the women of today have proven to increase in competitiveness with men, including in the professional field.
“It is not that universities limit how many men or women can enter because we follow the merits (or examinations).
“According to the merits, there are more women. For me, it is the quality of women today that we cannot deny, where they can compete for careers that used to be held by men.
“I do not see it as a big issue that needs to be highlighted,” he told Selangor Kini.
The former student of University of Malaya (UM) is also of the opinion that the number of male students at IPTAs have reduced because men are more likely to find working experience compared to education.
Newspaper reports previously informed that a total of 26,030 persons or 69.5 percent of female students were admitted to further their studies at IPTAs this year compared to 11,437 male students or 30.5 percent.
This situation sees the ratio of men and women in universities to be at 30:70.
He said that most men who continue their studies will find a different career path compared to the fields they study at institutes of higher learning.
He said that even though women are now at a higher level of education or professional, they still respect the role of men.
