PETALING JAYA, 27 May: The incumbent Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein has been urged to establish an independent audit commission to investigate the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA 2) development project.

This request was made by the Petaling Jaya Utara Member of Parliament, Tony Pua and the Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament, Nurul Izzah Anwar in a press conference today.

According to Tony, the explanation regarding the delay and the increase in cost to complete this project needs to be informed to the public as well as to answer all questions that have arisen previously.

On 14 May, the Eraman General Manager, Rawzy Ahmad held a closed meeting with regards to the delay in completion of KLIA 2, said Tony.

Eraman is the subsidiary company of Malaysian Airports Holdings Berhad which manages all airports in Malaysia.

According to Tony, the delay in the completion of the project will incur an increase in cost from RM1.7 billion to RM5 billion.

He added that this matter was brought up because the project not only involves a delay of not just two weeks or two months, but six months.

According to previous reports, KLIA2 should have been completed in September 2011 as announced by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Datuk Abd Rahim Bakri.

However, according to the statement issued on 14 May by Fawzy Ahmad, this project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2013.

In terms of cost for KLIA2, the original amount announced by the Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat on 22 July 2007 was RM1.7 billion.

However, a statement by the Deputy Transport Minister, Datuk Abd Rahim Bakri on 10 October mentioned that the cost of the project has increased to RM4 billion.

In private, Tony stated that he was not surprised of the project is completed in June 2014.

He said that the ministers should announce the new date in which the project will be completed.

“I will not be surprised if this project is completed on 28 June 2014 in conjunction with the 16th anniversary of KLIA,” he added.
