SHAH ALAM, June 3: Changing the Chairman and the Deputy Chairman of the Election Commission (EC) is the most important step to improve the general belief of the Special Parliamentary Committee (JKP) which will oversee the agency.
Selangor PAS Deputy Commissioner, Khalid Samad said that the appointment of a new Chairman and Deputy should be of individual who are completely independent, has high integrity and credibility to ensure that a reform of the electoral system can be done.
“We encourage for the individual to hold strong principals of wanting to see an transparent electoral system which is responsible in determining a government,” he said when contacted by telephone.
He welcomed the establishment of a special committee and also reminds the Prime Minister to implement it transparently and sincerely and to not just make mere proposals.
“We do not want to be like the Special Committee previously established where almost all recommendations were not taken seriously and properly implemented.
“We want to see determination this time by the government and the EC,” he added.
Khalid said that the people are now more aware of politics and will continue to observe and assess the sincerity of the Prime Minister in fulfilling his promises.
Last Saturday, Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced that the government will transfer the regulatory and the function of the EC to a special committee comprised of members of Parliament from all political parties, be it the government or the opposition.
He said, that the move is to strengthen the integrity and credibility of the EC which is currently placed under the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
