SHAH ALAM, June 20: The Selangor Government will establish a commission to investigate allegations of fraud and violation of election regulations in the state during the recent 13th General Election (GE-13).
The establishment of this commission is in accordance with the powers granted to the government under Section 2(3)(d) of the Inquiry Commission Act 1950.
Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said that the State Government is of the opinion that the irregularities in the election involve public interest.
“A secretariat headed by YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who will be sworn in as the Deputy Speaker of the Selangor State Assembly tomorrow, will act as the coordinator to ensure that the commission moves smoothly,” said Abdul Khalid in a press statement.
The State Government will also announce the appointment of panel members as well as the rules and regulations of the commission soon.
According to the statement, the State Government takes the stand that election fraud is a serious offence which could damage the country’s democratic system.
“(It is) very important for the State Government to investigate the allegations starting from the grassroots,” said Abdul Khalid.
The GE-13 which took place on May 5 is considered as the dirtiest election in the country.
This is evident when a total of 60 petitions have been filed by Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and BN; the highest amount of petitions ever recorded during any previous post-election.
Of the total 60 petitions, 39 were submitted by Pakatan Rakyat while 21 others were filed by BN.
