30% Become Local Authority Council Members, a Tribute to Selangor Women

SHAH ALAM, July 26: A policy stating that 30 percent of Council Members of Local Authorities have to consist of women is a tribute to women in this state.

It is also hoped to make Selangor’s vision as an ideal, progressive, prosperous and welfare state a reality.

According to the Executive Councillor in charge of Women’s Affairs, Rodziah Ismail in a press statement said that the policy is a strong indication to ensure excellence in human resource mobilisation in the state can be improved.

“Selangor women who are eligible now have no reason to not move forward in filling leadership positions as Council Members of Local Authorities.

“It would only be appropriate for the selection process to be based on qualification the encompass knowledge in administration, related laws, budget and issues related to the people,” said Rodziah who is also the Batu Tiga Assemblywoman.

The State Government Executive Council Meeting on July 24 decided to require all local authorities to have at least 30 percent of women Council Members for the next term.

The resolution which has been adopted by the Council Member Election Task Force will begin the new selection session on January 1 next year.

Previously, for two consecutive terms, the State Government set a 30 percent minimum for Executive Councillors to be women.
