SHAH ALAM, July 3: The State Government will enforce the law for employers to establish nurseries starting from year 2014.
Welfare and Women’s Affairs Exco, Rodziah Ismail said that it is a State Government effort to help working women in the state.
She said, women need help from the State Government in terms of policies to help them in their working environment without being extremely concerned about their small children.
“The State Government is currently working to create child-care centres for working women who cannot afford to hire a maid and the matter has been brought up in the State Executive Council last December and some suggestions have been put forward,” she said to answer a question from Lau Weng San (DAP-Kampung Tunku) during the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) session.
Rodziah said that among the suggestions was for the Local Authorities (PBT) under by-laws to make it compulsory for large supermarkets to provide a care centre for the use of its workers.
In addition, they have already discussed with factory associations to provide a care centre in the factory.
“We also encourage care centres to not take in more than nine children registered under the Social Welfare Department so as to own recognised certificates such as the Children’s Nursery Certification.
“So far, we have also found that there are supermarkets that have started providing childcare centres such as mentioned,” she said.
In the meantime, Rodziah informed that until June 2013, 2,961 students have already received benefits from the Tunas programme.
“The Tunas programme was just implemented last term, but it will be continued. We will ask all Assemblymen directly involved and handover the contribution to the Assemblymen so that they can give it to the kindergartens involved,” she said.
