Rafizi: EC’s Own Top Officials Acknowledge that the Electoral Roll has Problems

PETALING JAYA, July 5: A director of the Election Commission (EC) itself suggested for all voters to be re-registered is an acknowledgement that the electoral roll is now laden with dubious voters.

Therefore, PKR Strategy Director, Rafizi Ramli said that the EC should consider the suggestion seriously because the re-registration of 13 million voters can ensure a clean and credible electoral roll.

The suggestion was suggested personally by the Sabah EC Director, Datuk Md Idrus Ismail to the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on Illegal Immigrants in Sabah recently.

“The statement of the Sabah EC Chairman is a very strong statement issued from a state EC Director and he has personal experience in issuing the statement in the RCI,” he said.

Rafizi said this in a press conference here at the PKR headquarters.

“I welcome the statement because it is in line with the struggle for a clean electoral roll,” he said.

Rafizi hopes that the Chairman and the Deputy Chairman of the EC would provide prompt response regarding the statement.

“If previously the view of dismantling the EC from the opposition was rejected, the suggestion from the Sabah EC Director during the RCI should be given special attention,” he said.

Previously, Md Idrus said that the re-registration is the best way to deal with things such as the death of voters not being informed to the National Registration Department (NRD) and the change of the voters’ address.

Md Idrus also said that there are about three million citizens who are eligible to be voters but have not registered with the EC.
