Selangor Will Reject TPPA If It Has Adverse Effects

SHAH ALAM, July 4: The State Government will cooperate with NGOs to urge the Federal Government to not sign the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) with the United States if it is biased.

Environment and Tourism Exco, Elizabeth Wong said that among the things that raises concern is that the TPPA agreement includes land water and natural resources that are administered by the State Government.

Therefore, the State Government will hold discussions with TPPA consultants to know more about the policy if it is to be signed.

According to Elizabeth, the Central Government is likely to cancel a number of policies and environmental conditions if it does not meet conditions set by the TPPA.

“I was also informed, for example, if they (the Central Government) signs it, perhaps some of the policies and environmental conditions will have to be cancelled if they do not meet the grades mentioned in the TPPA,” she said.

Elizabeth said this during the winding up session of the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) here today.

The TPPA issue has received serious attention from Pakatan Rakyat (PR) Members of Parliaments who claim that the agreement will give greater rights to foreign investors and is detrimental to the people’s interest.
