SHAH ALAM, July 5: Selangor Executive Councillor for Local Government, Studies and Research, Datuk Teng Chang Khim suggested for the council members term to be limited to only four years.
This is to prevent any personal conflicts and abuse of power, he said in his winding up speech at the Selangor State Assembly yesterday.
According to him, previously there were council members who have served up to 10 years.
“We do not want conflicts of personal interest from happening…It is in line with the State Government’s principle of wanting to avoid that from happening,” he said.
Moreover, he added that the allowance of members of Local Authorities is still maintained at the rate of RM150 for each time they attend a meeting.
“The figure is still high when compared to what is obtained by Selangor Assembly which is RM75 per person.
“We need to focus on important things like garbage services and so on first. This (the raise in councillors allowances) is not an urgent matter,” he said.
Prior to that, the Kampung Tunku Assemblyman, Lau Weng San requested for the allowance of councillors to be increased in line with the times.
However, according to Teng, the State Government will look into the proposal to see whether it is appropriate in the future.
