SHAH ALAM, August 14: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) should break the supply chain for illegal firearms to this country to avoid the on-going of serious crimes, said Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
“The current problem is that it is not known how many people possess illegal firearms in the country.
“Make use of all available intelligence and the assistance of the Special Branch to detect leakage of firearms that have fallen into the hands of those who do not possess licences,” he said in a press statement today.
The PAS Information Chief said that MOHA should also reorganise the priorities of police tasks by focusing on efforts to fight crime and to patrol streets.
He asserted that at least 60 percent of police personnel should be assigned to fighting crime, and he is confident that detention without trial will not solve the problem of illegal possession of firearms.
He said that MOHA should also think of ways to prevent crime, and not take opportunity of shooting cases as an excuse to revive the Emergency Ordinance (EO).
“The number of EO criminals released in 2011 has risen to 260,000 people, according to Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s estimates. If so, what would be the point of using the EO to fight shooting crimes?
“Is the government proposing to detain 260,000 people, without trial, as a solution to the increasingly rampant shooting crimes?” he asked.
