SHAH ALAM, August 20: The increase in electricity tariffs which is being often denied in the House of Representatives is clearly a lie and is cheating the people, said Ampang Member of Parliament, Zuraida Kamaruddin.
She said that if Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and the government proceed with the proposed new electricity tariff adjustment, it would be BN’s gift to the people after winning the 13th General Election (GE-13).
According to her, the prices of goods and services will also happen after the new electricity tariff hike and this will burden the people.
“This matter has been raised at the last Parliamentary session, but it was denied. Finally, we can see now the proposed increase in electricity tariff will be implemented.
The tariff hike which is said to not be a burden is a lie. Whatever the increase, it will burden the people. Salaries do not go up, the cost of living is high, therefore, the prices of goods will certainly increase after the electricity tariff hike,” she said when contacted by TVSelangor.
She added that the people should be smarter in the future to assess for themselves matters like this.
She explained that even though it is said that the increase in electricity tariffs will have minimal impact on domestic consumers, but with the increasing cost of living, there is no guarantee that this increase will not burden the consumers.
“This is BN’s gift after the election. They should have to be careful in trying to win the hearts of the people while at the same time, providing a long-term burden where it is the people who will have to shoulder it without their (the government) assistance,” said Zuraidah.
